The Facebook Whistleblower Hearing Unearthed The Danger Of Engagement Algorithms | The Verge

THE FACEBOOK WHISTLEBLOWER HEARING UNEARTHED THE DANGER OF ENGAGEMENT ALGORITHMS

"Here's my message for Mark Zuckerberg: Your time of invading our privacy, promoting toxic content, and preying on children and teens is over," Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) said at Tuesday's hearing. "Congress will be taking action. You can work with us or not work with us, but we will not allow your company to harm our children and our families and our democracies any longer." The Verge

Light Waves Can Restore Your Body Clock And Sleep Schedule | Futurism

LIGHT WAVES CAN RESTORE YOUR BODY CLOCK AND SLEEP SCHEDULE

While someday our robot avatar will do the commuting for us, right now, we're a species that tends to travel long distances quickly. And our internal clock doesn't always keep up, so we're constantly adjusting our sleep schedules, struggling to stay awake at work or get to sleep at night. Light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to mimic natural outdoor conditions. Futurism

Meet The Guy Who Loves Hobbits So Much He Became One | Vice

MEET THE GUY WHO LOVES HOBBITS SO MUCH HE BECAME ONE

A big fan of the Lord of the Rings franchise, Nicholas Gentile initially wanted to use the plot to build a family home where he could live in harmony with nature with his wife and two kids — just like hobbits, the small human-like creatures from J. R. R. Tolkien's fantastical universe. But after throwing a big hobbit-themed party on the plot, Gentile realised he wanted to build a whole hobbit village on those grassy fields and welcome like-minded guests from all around the world. NASA's Dart Mission Will Deliberately Crash Into An Asteroid's Moon In The Name Of Planetary Defense | CNN

NASA'S DART MISSION WILL DELIBERATELY CRASH INTO AN ASTEROID'S MOON IN THE NAME OF PLANETARY DEFENSE

After launching in November, NASA will test its asteroid deflection technology in September 2022 to see how it impacts the motion of a near-Earth asteroid in space. The target of this asteroid deflection technology is Dimorphos, a small moon orbiting the near-Earth asteroid Didymos. This will be the agency's first full-scale demonstration of this type of technology on behalf of planetary defense. CNN

SUBTLETY IN FANDOM IS NOT OVERRATED

Contrary to what you've seen on TV and in your local bars, it's possible to be a sports fan without ensconcing yourself in team colors head to toe or donning a bulky, scratchy jersey. If you want to show your support in the least obnoxious way possible, there are muted and downright stylish options. '47 Brand

The Fat Bear Week Winner Is The Champion We All Needed | Mashable

THE FAT BEAR WEEK WINNER IS THE CHAMPION WE ALL NEEDED

The 2021 Fat Bear Week champion is missing teeth, and many of his choppers are worn down. He's been alive for a quarter of a century — which is quite old for a brown bear. And he showed up to Katmai's salmon-filled Brooks River unusually late this year (by about a month), looking gaunt. His ribcage was visible. Yet bear 480 "Otis" gave us a poignant lesson in perseverance. He used great fishing savvy to pack on impressive weight in a short amount of time. The public has now crowned Otis the 2021 Fat Bear Week champion, Katmai announced on Tuesday night. Mashable
