INSIDE LIBERLAND, A CRYPTO-LIBERTARIAN MICRONATION IN EASTERN EUROPE As Yugoslavia splintered in the early 1990s, various countries rose from the former territory but a tiny island on the Danube River fell into dispute between Serbia and Croatia. In 2015, Vit Jedlicka, a Czech citizen, planted a flag on the island and declared it a new country, Liberland, with Jedlicka at its helm as president.
