This Computing Breakthrough Just Transferred The Entire Internet's Traffic In 1 Second | Digital Trends

THIS COMPUTING BREAKTHROUGH JUST TRANSFERRED THE ENTIRE INTERNET'S TRAFFIC IN 1 SECOND

Researchers from Denmark, Sweden, and Japan banded together and tested how much data they could transfer in 1 second using a photonic chip, which allows optical components to be built onto computer chips. As it turns out, they can transfer 1.84 petabits of data per second — about twice the size of the internet's traffic. That's about 230 million photo downloads per second. That means they probably copied over your embarrassing high school pics and your embarrassing MySpace page from 2004. Digital Trends

New Technique For Decoding People's Thoughts Can Now Be Done From A Distance | Science Alert

NEW TECHNIQUE FOR DECODING PEOPLE'S THOUGHTS CAN NOW BE DONE FROM A DISTANCE

Scientists can now "decode" people's thoughts without even touching their heads, The Scientist reported. Past mind-reading techniques relied on implanting electrodes deep in peoples' brains. The new method, described in a report posted 29 Sept. to the preprint database bioRxiv, instead relies on a noninvasive brain scanning technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). AI Is Disrupting Long-Held Assumptions About Universal Grammar | Inverse

AI IS DISRUPTING LONG-HELD ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT UNIVERSAL GRAMMAR

Sorry Noam Chomsky, but artificial intelligence may have bested you here. The thinking used to be that grammar as a concept was hardwired into our brains from birth so that as children when we learned words, that hardwiring helped us structure them in a way that made sense. However, AI might be quietly disproving that theory as evidenced by the fact it is being trained to write things like full articles and headlines all based on linguistic experience alone and no hard-coded rules on grammar at all. Great, we guess our childhoods are a lie now. Inverse

Rats With Backpacks Could Help Rescue Earthquake Survivors | CNN

RATS WITH BACKPACKS COULD HELP RESCUE EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS

Buildings don't collapse very often — but when they do, it's catastrophic for those trapped inside. Natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes can level entire towns, and for the search and rescue teams trying to find survivors, it's a painstaking task. But an unlikely savior is being trained up to help out: rats. The project, conceived of by Belgian non-profit APOPO, is kitting out rodents with tiny, high-tech backpacks to help first responders search for survivors among rubble in disaster zones. CNN
