NASA ASTEROID THREAT PRACTICE DRILL SHOWS WE'RE NOT READY In a recent exercise run by NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office, a small, fast-moving asteroid leveled Winston-Salem, NC with thousands of casualties. Why did they run an exercise like this? To prove a point: While we might have recently flown a satellite into a large asteroid in space, successfully, the U.S. still does not have the ability to handle these smaller yet still devastating catastrophes. These rocks move too fast and still pack enough punch to put a serious dent in our population numbers. Also, no, we can't nuke them because, despite what the movie Armageddon wants you to believe, that would be an international legal nightmare. Scientific American |
