Glass bricks, while effective for allowing daylight into buildings, are historically not good insulators and they certainly can't be used for entire load-bearing walls, until now. Scientists at Switzerland's Empa research group have developed translucent silica aerogel granules that can be filled within large pieces of glass to create bricks for load-bearing walls, according to New Atlas. The bricks allow sunlight to pass through, reducing the cost of indoor lighting, and are crafted in a manner that is competitively priced with traditional bricks. When sealed off, the insulation provided by the aerogel filling makes the bricks some of the best-performing on the market according to researchers.
