THE INSIDE STORY OF HOW TUMBLR LOST ITS WAY If you can believe it, Tumblr turned 15 this month. The microblogging site that launched a thousand ships was created by software consultant David Karp in 2007. During a time when longer-form blogging on platforms like Blogger and WordPress dominated, Tumblr offered a short-form, multimedia-rich experience that drew in millions. By 2013, the site was acquired by Yahoo for more than $1 billion, in what some saw as a gamble. "Tumblr is redefining creative expression online," then Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said, calling it "the internet's fastest-growing media frenzy." A press release promised "not to screw it up." Somehow, they did, and Tumblr has never recovered. Mashable |
