The Italian government plans to build a suspension bridge, the longest in the world, to link Sicily and southern Italy across the Strait of Messina, according to Jalopnik. However, this project has faced opposition. Many citizens on both sides of the bridge have spoken out against it due to emotional attachment to the ferry, environmental concerns and financial reasons. Some factors that make the engineering process difficult include the geological structure of the Strait of Messina, high winds, and geological movement of the region.
