The most precise atomic clocks ever are proving Einstein right — again | Popular Science

“For most of human history, we kept time by Earth’s place in space. The second was a subdivision of an Earth day, and, later, an Earth year. Then came the atomic clock. … Scientists delved into atoms of the element cesium, where a process called the hyperfine transition emits and absorbs microwaves, which scientists could time very precisely with the help of a vibrating quartz crystal. … Now, two different groups have created clocks that can measure subtle physics within the clocks themselves. The research teams published their respective results in two different papers in the journal Nature. These new clocks can measure one of Albert Einstein’s predictions — time dilation due to gravity — on the smallest scale yet.”

Astronomers puzzled by galaxy with no stars | The Byte

“Astronomers have accidentally found an entire galaxy that appears to have plenty of gas — but no visible stars to speak of. Their findings, which were presented this week at the annual meeting of the American Astronomy Society, may seem paradoxical on their face, but the discovery could provide a rare, possibly never-before-seen insight that challenges our understanding of how stars and galaxies are formed.”

New species of giant Tyrannosaurus predates T. rex by 6 million years | New Atlas

“If Tyrannosaurus rex is too mainstream, discerning 10-year-olds may now have a new name to spout when asked their favorite dinosaur – Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis. The newly identified species appears to be more primitive than its famous cousin, but just as big and scary. It’s not surprising that T. rex has utterly captured the public imagination – there’s just no denying the coolness factor of an ancient superpredator the size of a double-decker bus. Although the new species has a way lamer name – T. mcraeensis, named after the layers of rock it was found in – you wouldn’t say that to its face. It was still a 12-m-long (39-ft), 10-ton tank full of teeth.”

The answer: Bacon, of course!

The answer: Bacon, of course!

According to the Astronomy.com webpage: “Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first people to walk on the Moon on July 21, 1969. It was a momentous day for humankind, but not just because of that ‘one small step for a man.’ To celebrate becoming the first to walk on the Moon, the two men also sat down to eat the first meal on the Moon. What was on the menu? Bacon (an American staple), peaches, sugar cookie squares, a pineapple-grapefruit drink, and coffee.”
